AAR reports volume declines for week ending June 22

Rail carloads, at 257,836, fell 4% annually, and intermodal units, at 267,280, decreased 7.5% annually.

TheAssociation of American Railroads (AAR)reported this week that United States rail carload and intermodal volumes each saw annual declines for the week ending June 22.

Rail carloads, at 257,836, fell 4% annually, and were topped the weeks ending June 15 and June 8 at 257,385 and 246,758, respectively.

AAR said that one of the ten carload commodity it tracks posted an annual gain for the week ending June 22, with petroleum and petroleum products up 2,655 carloads to 14,062. Commodity groups that posted decreases compared with the same week in 2018 included coal, down 4,590 carloads, to 78,543; nonmetallic minerals, down 2,085 carloads, to 36,309; and metallic ores and metals, down 2,071 carloads, to 22,662.

Intermodal containers and trailers, at 267,280, decreased 7.5% annually and trailed the week ending June 15 at 270,604 and topped the week ending June 8 at 266,341.

On a year-to-date basis for the first 25 weeks of 2019, U.S. rail carloads are down 2.9% annually to 6,290,803, and intermodal units, at 6,652,512, are off 3%.
