U.S. rail and intermodal volumes are mixed, for week ending September 9, reports AAR
Rail carloads, at 218,101, eked out a 0.6% annual gain, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 229,244 units, fell 3.8% annually.

Amid a muted Peak Season, POLA and POLB volumes are mixed in August
POLA reported that August volume was up 3% annually, coming in at 828,016 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units). This marked the first growth month out of the last 13 months through August. The Port of Long Beach reported that total August volume, at 682,312 TEU, was off 15.4% annually.

August retail sales see slight gains, reports Commerce and NRF
Commerce reported that total August retail sales, at $697.6 billion, were up 0.6% from July to August, and were up 2.5% annually. Total retail sales, from June through August, saw a 2.2% annual increase, it noted. NRF’s calculation of retail sales – which excludes automobile dealers, gasoline stations and restaurants to focus on core retail – showed August was up 0.1% seasonally adjusted from July and up 3.3% unadjusted year over year. In July, sales were up 0.7% month over month and also up 3.3% year over year.

GXO announces plans to acquire PFSweb
Under the terms of the agreement outlined by GXO, GXO and PFS entered into a definitive agreement in which GXO will acquire PFS for $7.50 per share which it said represents an equity value of around $181 million.

New supply chain-focused offering is introduced by Amazon
Seattle-based e-commerce giant Amazon said this week it has introduced a new end-to-end, automated suite of supply chain services that are geared towards offering Amazon sellers with a full offering to move products from their manufacturers to customers worldwide. Entitled Supply Chain by Amazon, the company explained that this offering enables sellers to leverage Amazon’s advanced logistics, fulfillment, and transportation services to keep products in stock, ship faster and more reliably, and lower costs.

New Descartes’ report shows slight import gains, from July to August
From July to August, Descartes reported that U.S.-bound container import volumes eked out a 0.4% annual increase, coming in at 2,196,268 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), while posting a 13.2% annual decline and up 2.5% compared to pre-pandemic August 2019. And on a year-to-date basis through August, imports are down 2.1% compared to the same period in 2019.

Logility makes entrance into supply chain-focused AI, with acquisition of Garvis
In a deal that meshes logistics and supply chain technology with AI, Atlanta-based Logility, a leading provider of collaborative supply chain optimization and advanced retail planning solutions, said this week that it has acquired Antwerp, Belgium-based Garvis, a SaaS services provider that combines large language models (ChatGPT) with AI-native demand forecasting.

Canadian National and Norfolk Southern are set to launch a new domestic intermodal service
CN and NS officials said that this new service will provide customers with an integrated, market-competitive, and efficient all-rail service. And they added that this service will will connect CN-served Canadian markets with Norfolk Southern-served Kansas City and Atlanta, which they referred to as the heart of the fast-growing manufacturing and consumer base in the Southeastern U.S.

National diesel increase heads up for the eighth consecutive week, reports EIA
With a 4.8-cent increase, the national average, for the week of September 11, came in at $4.50 per gallon.
