USPS officials said that should the PRC’s Postal Service Governors sign off on these proposed rate increases, the percentage increases, for certain USPS product segments would increase to varying degrees, including Shipping Services product prices up roughly 3.5% for Priority Mail service and 1.2% for Priority Mail Express service.

An ongoing string of new records remained intact, with this week’s release of the October edition of the DAT Truckload Volume Index, which was issued by DAT Freight & analytics, an online marketplace for spot market truckload freight, as new records were again set for the national average spot truckload rates for dry van and refrigerated (reefer) freight.

Port Tracker reported for September, the most recent month for which data is available, U.S-based retail container ports handled 2.11 million Twenty Foot Equivalent Units (TEU), for a new record, topping August’s 2.1 million TEU, which marked the highest tally for containers imported in a single month, at the time, going back to when NRF first started tracking imports in 2002.

Revenue—at $4.22 billion—was up 1.7%, and net income attributable to common shareholders—at $21 million—fell 51.2%. Operating income—at $223 million—was down 2.7%. Diluted earnings per share came in at $0.83 compared to $1.14 a year ago, and adjusted quarterly EBITDA—at 439 million—was up less than 1% and was the best third quarter EBITDA in its history, coming in ahead of Wall Street expectations by $87 million, or 25%.

The report noted that third quarter industrial leasing came in at 114 million square feet and was paced by e-commerce (15.3 million square feet), logistics & distribution (14.3 million square feet), and 3PLs (7.1 million square feet), as well as traditional retailers (7.1 million square feet), construction materials & building fixtures (9.9 million square feet); manufacturing (2.1 million square feet); and food ands beverage (6.1 million square feet).

Total third quarter volume—at 4,719,462 units—rose 1.2% annually. Domestic containers—at 2,103,361—increased 9.8%, with trailers—at 325,802—up 9.8%. All domestic equipment—at 2,429,163—was also up 9.8%. ISO, or international, containers, were down 6.5%, to 2,290,299.

The report’s key indicator—the Services PMI (formerly the Non-Manufacturing PMI)—came in at 56.6 (a reading of 50 or higher indicates growth is occurring), in October, following a 0.9% increase in September, a 1.2% August decline, and a 1% gain in July.

In its monthly Manufacturing Report on Business, ISM said that the report’s key metric, the PMI, hit 59.3 (a reading of 50 or higher indicates growth), which topped September’s 55.4 by 3.9%, while growing at a faster rate for the fifth consecutive month, while the overall economy grew for the sixth consecutive month.

The report’s third quarter National Shipment Index—at 114.9—was up 6% compared to the second quarter and down 7.6% annually. This followed a 7.6% decline, from the first quarter to the second quarter. On the spending side, the report’s third quarter spend index—at 186.0—was up 14.6%, from the second quarter to the third, and was off 7.3% annually. The sequential gain nearly erased the 13.7% spending decrease, from the first quarter to the second quarter.
