UPS makes major investment into natural gas fleet

Atlanta-based freight transportation and logistics bellwether UPS announced today that, from 2020-2022, it will buy more than 6,000 natural gas-powered trucks, in a $450 million investment geared towards expanding its alternative fuel and advanced technology fleet and supporting infrastructure.

Revenue, at $17.1 billion, while down $16 million, was essentially flat, according to USPS officials, and the organization had a net loss of almost $2.3 billion, which was up $767 million annually. USPS said that this tops net loss of nearly $1.5 billion a year ago, with controllable loss for the quarter almost $1.1 billion, compared to a controllable loss of $889 million for the same quarter last year.

The Institute for Supply Management (ISM) reported today in its April Manufacturing Report on Business that April Manufacturing output remained in growth mode, despite seeing declines in some of its key metrics. The report’s key metric, the PMI, dipped 2.5% to 52.8 (a reading of 50 or higher indicates growth), following a 1.1% increase from February to March, a 2.4% decrease from January to February and a 2.3% increase from December to January. Amazon preps for One-Day Free Shipping

Amazon said it is at work in evolving its ubiquitous Prime Two-Day Shipping program in a One-Day Shipping program. On the company’s earning conference call, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky said that Amazon is able to make this move, due to having spent more than 20 years expanding its fulfillment and logistics network, while acknowledging it is a big investment, with $800 million allocated, that will require a lot of work, too.
