DHL Supply Chain rolls out strategic partnership with ReverseLogix
This decision comes at a time when DHL Supply Chain continues to see impressive growth, for its e-commerce business, which saw a 15% annual growth rate over the 2021 Peak Season, coupled with total national retail returns climbing 78%, to more than $761 billion, according to data issued by the National Retail Federation. And the company said that this level of growth was commensurate with what it called substantial returns volume growth, from 2020 to 2021.

Rise of the “mega third party logistics (3PL)”
The consolidation of the major logistics services continues. A.P. Moeller-Maersk, the largest ocean carrier group, recently announced the acquisition of U.S.-based Pilot and gave notice of more purchases of transport and warehousing assets to come soon.

ISM reports solid February manufacturing output
The report’s key metric, the PMI, came in at 58.6 (a reading of 50 or higher indicates growth), posting a 1.0% gain over January, marking the 21st consecutive month of growth, at a faster rate, as well as the 21st consecutive month of overall economic growth. February’s PMI reading is 1.7 below the 60.3 average over the last 12 months, with March 2021’s 63.7 marking the high for that period and January 2022’s 57.6 marking the low for that period.

EIA reports national diesel average again tops $4 per gallon mark
The national average, for the week of February 28, increased $0.049, to $4.104 per gallon, eclipsing the $4 per gallon marks for the third consecutive week. This comes on the heels of a $0.036-cent increase, to $4.055, for the week of February 21, and a $0.68-cent increase, to $4.019 per gallon, for the week of February 14.

DOJ and FMC intend to continue partnership focused on fair competition in ocean shipping sector
This follows a July 2021 inking of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which formalized the working relationship between the organizations and established a framework for partnership between the FMC and DOJ’s Antitrust Division that “enhances cooperation in the enforcement of antitrust and competition laws, including the Shipping Act…by facilitating information exchange between and among attorneys, economists, and technical experts,” according to DOJ and FMC.

GXO Logistics and Clipper Plc reach terms on deal, for GXO to acquire Clipper

Yellow is adding two new driving academies to its stable of 14 schools to prepare the next generation of professional truck drivers for careers in transportation.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes see strong gains, for week ending February 19, reports AAR
Rail carloads—at 237,256—headed up 38.2% annually, and intermodal containers and trailers—at 260,566—rose 26.3% annually.

NRF’s Shay calls on ILWU and PMA leadership to begin negotiations on a new contract
In a letter to ILWU President William E. Adams and PMA Chairman and CEO James McKenna, NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay urged them to begin contract negotiations as soon as possible. Shay explained that NRF applauds the close partnership ILWU and PMA have achieved throughout the pandemic, coupled with the ability to deal with the unprecedented cargo surge over the past two years.

POLA and POLB each set new January volume records
Total January POLA volume—at 865,595 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units)—were up 3.6% annually, marking the highest-volume January in POLA’s 115 years of operations. And total January POLB data—at 800,943 TEU—saw a 4.8% annual increase, marking the first time the port processed more than 800,000 TEU in January and topping the previous record set in January 2021.

ID Logistics signals intent to acquire Kane Logistics for $240 million
Ogron, France-based ID Logistics, a provider of international contract logistics services, recently announced it has inked an agreement to acquire 100% of Scranton, Pa.-based Kane Logistics, a provider of value-added warehousing and contract logistics services, from Kane’s ownership group, Harkness Capital Partners. Following a news leak, which indicated that Greenwich, Conn.-based global contract logistics services provider GXO Logistics was acquiring London-based Clipper Logistics plc, a provider of omni-channel retail logistics services, the companies said on February 20 that their respective boards announced in a joint statement “they have reached agreement on the key terms of a possible cash and share offer for Clipper by GXO.”
