May freight shipments and expenditures see annual declines, says Cass Freight Index
May’s shipment reading—at 1.166—was down 5.6% annually and up 1.9% compared to April. May expenditures—at 3.614—saw a 15.7% annual decline and were down 6.8% compared to April.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are down for the week ending June 10, reports AAR
Rail carloads, at 228,988, eked out a 0.6% annual increase, and intermodal containers and trailers, at 242,152 units, fell 11.2% annually.

May retail sales see gains, report Commerce and NRF
Commerce reported that May retail sales—at $686.6 billion—headed up 0.3% over April and were up 1.6% annually. And it added that total retail sales, from March through May, were up 1.7% annually. NRF reported that May retail sales were up 0.4% over April and were up 4.4% on an unadjusted basis annually.

ILWU and PMA come to terms on a tentative new six-year labor deal
Freight transportation, logistics, and supply chain stakeholders are breathing a collective sigh of relief today, as the long-running labor negotiations West Coast port labor quarrel has ostensibly come to an end, with the International Longshore Warehouse Union (ILWU) and the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) coming to terms yesterday on a six-year tentative deal.

UPS and Teamsters come to terms on heat safety in ongoing negotiations
The Teamsters said that it had come to terms with UPS on installing air conditioning in UPS delivery trucks driven by UPS Teamsters members.

POLA and POLB each report annual May volume declines and sequential gains
POLA reported that total May volume came in at 779,140 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units), representing a 19.5% annual decline. And the Port of Long Beach reported that May volume fell 14.9% annually, coming in at 758,225 TEU.

Forward progress remains intact in labor negotiations between Memphis-based global freight transportation services provider FedEx and pilots at the company’s FedEx Express subsidiary represented by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA), following a tentative agreement reached between the parties late last month.

National diesel average falls again, for the week of June 12, reports EIA
The national average was down 0.003-cents, to $3.797 per gallon, marking the second time (along with the week of June 5) the national diesel average fell below the $3.80 per gallon mark since the week of January 24, 2022, when it came in at $3.78.

Descartes May Global Shipping Report sees sees decent sequential traction despite volume declines
On an annual basis, May U.S. container import volumes saw a 3.8% increase, from April to May, coming in at 2,097,813 TEU (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units) and were down 20.0% annually while seeing a 0.5% annual increase when compared to pre-pandemic May 2019. What’s more, Descartes observed that through the first five months of 2023, with a 1.3% difference for the same period in each year.

Reshoring isn’t the only change taking place in supply chains, notes Kearney report
Research from consultancy Kearney has found that 96% of CEOs are evaluating reshoring their operations, have already done so, or are considering it. That is up from 78% in 2022. That same report also found that American imports of Mexico-manufactured goods have increased from $320 billion pre-pandemic to $402 billion today.

In the letter to the President Biden U.S. Chamber President and CEO Suzanne Clark wrote that it is imperative for the White House to intervene immediately and appoint an independent mediator to help the ILWU and PMA come to terms on an agreement on a new contract.
