DHL expands its presence in Orlando with move into new facility
DHL eCommerce Solutions, a subsidiary of global logistics services provider Deutsche Post DHL Group, said it has relocated its Orlando, Fla, -based distribution center into a new space that is double the size of its previous location.

U.S. rail carload and intermodal volumes are down, for week ending June 17, reports AAR

AAR report highlights ways in which railroads can play a key role in facing climate change
Industry stakeholders have, for years, referenced the environmental impacts that railroads provide, in this statistic: rail can move one ton of freight nearly 500 miles on a single gallon of fuel. That was true years ago and remains true today, too. And it serves as a thesis, of sorts, in a new report issued by the Washington, D.C.-based Association of American Railroads, entitled “Freight Railroads & Climate Change: Reducing Emissions, Enhancing Resiliency.”

FedEx finishes FY 2023 with earnings declines, amid signs of improvements
Quarterly revenue—at $21.9 billion—was down 10.3% annually, and adjusted operating income—at $1.8 billion—fell 21%. Adjusted earnings per share came in at $4.94, down 28% annually and topping Wall Street expectations, at $4.85.

OnTrac study looks at retailers’ needs for quicker deliveries as a competitive advantage
The findings of the study, entitled “How Retailers Can Build Supply Chains That Thrive in the Post-Pandemic World,” were based on a partnership between OnTrac and Hanover Research through a survey of more than 150 C-Suite, VP, and director level supply chain professionals at large retailers, focusing on the challenges they are facing and how they plan to respond to those challenges, as well as key investment areas for them.

May DAT Truckload Volume Index readings are stable
The Van TVI was up 5% compared to April, to 220, the reefer TVI was up 5% compared to April, to 164, and the flatbed TVI was up 7% compared to April, to 258.

National diesel average trends down again, for the week of June 12, reports EIA
EIA reported that the national average fell 0.003 cents, to $3.794 per gallon, marking the fourth time (along with the week of June 5 and the week of June 12) that the national average fell below the $3.80 per gallon mark, going back to the week of January 24, 2022, when it came in at $3.78.

Shippers back in control as logistics market swings back, new State of Logistics report says
Total U.S. logistics costs soared to $2.3 trillion last year, growing 19.6% from 2022 and now representing 9.1% of the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), according to the newest State of Logistics report.

May intermodal volumes see declines, reports IANA
Total May volume came in at 1,418,733 units, falling 8.8% annually. While topping April’s total volume, which came in at 1,300,416 units, May’s annual decline was not as steep as April’s 15.4% annual decrease.

UPS Teamster members overwhelmingly approve strike authorization vote
Late last week, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) said that 97% of its members that work for Atlanta-based global freight transportation and logistics services provider UPS have signed off on authorizing a strike, which IBT said gives the union “maximum leverage to win demands at the bargaining table.”

May freight shipments and expenditures see annual declines, says Cass Freight Index
May’s shipment reading—at 1.166—was down 5.6% annually and up 1.9% compared to April. May expenditures—at 3.614—saw a 15.7% annual decline and were down 6.8% compared to April.
