AAR reports gains in weekly traffic


Carload and intermodal volumes were up for the week ending July 27, according to data released this week by theAssociation of American Railroads(AAR).

Carload volume—at 295,532—was up 2.5 percent annually and ahead of the week ending July 20 at 277,793 and the week ending July 13 at 277,132.

Intermodal was up 2.4 percent annually at 256,379 trailers and containers and ahead of the week ending July 20 at 253,424 and the week ending July 13 at 248,201.

Total weekly traffic for carloads and intermodal units—at 551,911—was up 2.5 percent annually.

Of the ten main commodity groups tracked by the AAR, six saw annual increases.

Petroleum and petroleum products were up 23.2 percent. Grain was down 7.6 percent.

On a year-to-date basis, carloads are down 1.3 percent at 8,315,858 and intermodal is up 3.4 percent at containers and trailers.
