Retail sales see varying gains in March, says Commerce and NRF data

Commerce reported that March was up 0.6% compared to February at $494.6 billion and was up 4.5% compared to March 2017, and NRF reported a 0.3% annual gain on a seasonally-adjusted basis from February to March, with annual retail sales in March up 5%.
Retail sales in January are slow to start to the year

Commerce reported that its advanced estimate of U.S. retail and food service sales for January were down 0.3% compared to December at $492 billion but were up 3.6% on an annual basis. NRF data pointed to a 0.26% decline in retail sales from December to January, with annual sales up 5.4%. NRF’s data does not include automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants.

Commerce reported that January retail sales were up 0.2 percent compared to December and saw a 5.6 percent annual gain at $472.1 billion. The NRF reported that retail sales, excluding automobiles, gas stations, and restaurants, headed up 3.8 percent annually in January and were up 0.4 percent on a seasonally-adjusted basis compared to a very strong December.
